Idaho state name
The origin of the name Idaho is highly controversial.
In the early 1960s, when the US Congress was debating the creation of a new territory in the Rocky Mountains, lobbyist George Willing proposed calling it “Idaho”. He claimed that “idaho” was a Shoshone Indian word meaning “pearl of the mountains” or “sun coming from the mountains.” Later, Willing, known for his eccentricity, said that he coined the word “idaho” himself. The information that the word “Idaho” comes from Indian languages can still be found in many sources today.
The new territory was named Colorado, but the name “Idaho” was not forgotten, there is a city of Idaho Springs in Colorado.
“Idaho” is the name of a county within the Washington Territory. This name was given in honor of the steamer “Idaho”, which sailed in 1860 on the Columbia River. It is not known whether there is any connection between the name of this ship and George Willing’s proposal to the US Congress.
In 1863, the new Idaho Territory was created, which included the lands of Idaho County.
