Hawaii state name

The name of the state of Hawaii comes from the Proto-Polynesian language, where the word hawai meant “homeland”, “father’s house”.

In this sense, the word hawai is still used today in some languages of the peoples of Oceania, for example, in Samoa.

In modern Hawaiian (which is the state language of Hawaii along with English), the word Hawaii is a proper name and does not carry any other meaning.
