West Virginia State Overview
In 1861, after Virginia seceded from the United States of America, representatives of the forty-eight western districts of the state gathered in the city of Wheeling, disagreeing with this decision. In June they declared their loyalty to the northerners and elected a new government. In the fall, the decision to secede from Virginia was supported in a referendum by the residents of the region, and in November the Constitutional Convention of West Virginia began to work. Six months later, the new state’s legislators petitioned the US Congress for admission to the Union, and in June 1863, West Virginia became the thirty-fifth US state.
Now, about 45,000 people live in the capital and largest city of West Virginia, Charleston.
West Virginia’s economy has been based for decades on mining, primarily hard coal (which is the second largest state in the country after Wyoming). The decline in demand for coal led to a significant decline in the industry and a decline in the level of economic development of the state as a whole. In modern West Virginia, the chemical industry, timber production, and mechanical engineering are well developed. The relief of the state is not conducive to agriculture, however, poultry and cattle are bred on West Virginia farms, and fruits (primarily apples) are grown in orchards. An important branch of the economy of the “Mountain State” is tourism.
