Tennessee is made up of 95 counties and 139 public school districts. Each county is responsible for providing educational services to local residents through its own district. The state also has several charter schools that are independently operated and funded by the state.

The majority of Tennessee’s public school districts are located in small towns and rural areas, though some larger cities have multiple school districts serving their students. Nashville, for example, has five separate school districts: Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS), Franklin Special School District (FSSD), Williamson County Schools (WCS), Sumner County Schools (SCS), and Cheatham County School System (CCSS). Memphis also has four separate school districts: Shelby County Schools (SCS), Bartlett City Schools (BCS), Germantown Municipal School District (GMSD), and Arlington Community Schools (ACS).

Each district offers a variety of educational programs to its students including elementary, middle, high schools as well as vocational-technical schools. Tennessee is located in the South of the United States and belongs to the Southeast Central States. Tennessee is bordered by the states of Kentucky and Virginia to the north, North Carolina to the east, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi to the south, and Arkansas and Missouri to the west.

Tennessee is located within two United States physiographic regions. The eastern districts of the state are part of the Appalachian mountain system: the Blue Ridge Range on the border with North Carolina, to the west passing first into the Ridge and Valley region (“Ridges and Valleys”), and then into the Cumberland Plateau. The central (rolling plains from the escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau to the Tennessee River) and Western (lowlands with extremely fertile soils) regions of the state belong to the US Interior Plains.
