French, Italian, Chinese and Vietnamese specialties are served in the hotel restaurants. French and Chinese cuisine in Papeete is famous. Popular dishes include smoked breadfruit, mountain bananas, fafa (spinach) with suckling pig, poisson cru (marinated fish) or poe (starchy pudding made from papayas, mangoes and bananas). Trucks or food trucks on the beach sell steaks, french fries, chicken, poisson cru brochettes and shish kebabs. The range of alcoholic beverages is large.

Social Rules of Conduct
Manners: The rather simple lifestyle of the islands can be seen in the typical fares huts, which are made of bamboo and have pandanus roofs. The usual forms of politeness should be observed. Dress: Local women are dressed in light-colored pareus and men in their matching counterpart, but visitors are expected to wear casual western attire. Tipping is not customary.
