China Overview
The People’s Republic of China is a socialist republic in East Asia with the 20 million metropolis of Beijing as its capital and the fourth largest state in the world in terms of area. Its peripheral areas in the west and south are occupied by wide plateaus such as the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and mighty high mountains such as the Himalayas , Transhimalayas , Kunlun Shan and Tian Shan. In the northeast, arid areas such as the Djungary , the Tarim Basin and the Gobi are spreading out. Two thirds of China are higher than 1000 m and to the east the country falls to the Great Plain in stages. It is traversed by the mighty Hwangho (Yellow River) and Yangtze River. The plain is joined by hill country in the north and the Manchurian Plain (Manchuria), in the southeast low mountain range.
China has almost all climatic zones: from extremely dry and winter cold in the central Asian west to tropical areas on the South China Sea. The Qinling Mountains form a climatic divide between northern China, into which polar air flows in in winter, and southern China, which is influenced by the summer monsoon. The millennia of land use as arable and pasture land has pushed back natural vegetation. Large reforestation projects are designed to prevent further soil erosion.
China is the most populous country on earth. Most of the residents live in the eastern part. 92% are Han Chinese. 56 recognized minorities are distributed over the peripheral areas in the south, west and north. The population density is highest in the coastal regions and lowest in Tibet. The largest metropolitan areas are Shanghai , Beijing-Tianjin, Chongqing and the region on the Pearl River Delta with Guangzhou (Canton), Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
Population growth has slowed sharply due to the state’s one-child policy (1980s to 2015) and reduced poverty. There is a clear surplus of men and the population is aging rapidly. The birth rate is among the lowest in the world.
State and society see themselves in the tradition of a culture that is more than 7,000 years old: with a font made up of 80,000 characters, a sophisticated literature, constantly refined art and a multitude of technical achievements. The coexistence of people was shaped less by the firm beliefs of a religion than by the practical doctrines of virtue of Confucianism , which already developed in the pre-imperial period (until 221 BC).
The People’s Republic is a socialist state in which the Communist Party (CCP) is the leading force. The Maoism with its communist experiments, particularly the so-called. Cultural Revolution (1966-76), gave way to a pragmatic course of economic success and national strength in the place of communist ideology put rigor.
With the economic reforms from the late 1970s (socialist market economy), migration increased from the inland to the coast and from the countryside to the city. High economic growth created previously unheard of prosperity, especially in the big cities, but also left behind social inequality, wasted resources and environmental pollution. In the 1990s, China became the “workshop of the world”. Today, thanks to its technological innovation and financial strength, the resource-rich country is well on the way to becoming one of the industrialized nations.
