Democratic Republic of the Congo Overview

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a presidential republic in Central Africa with Kinshasa as its capital. The second largest country in Africa is located in the Congo Basin. The river is of great importance for drainage and as a traffic artery. In the east is the Central African Rift with mountain ranges and lakes. The tropical climate is always humid in the north and in the center, alternately humid in the south. The central part of the country is covered by tropical rainforest. A 40 km wide coastal strip borders the Atlantic. The Congo is sparsely populated. Over half of the people live in the countryside. The population is made up of over 200 ethnic groups, most of which belong to the Bantu group. Twa live in the rainforest(Pygmies). There are also hundreds of thousands of refugees and internally displaced persons. French, Lingala, Swahili, Kikongo and Tshiluba are official and lingua franca. Most of the people belong to Christianity, there are minorities of Muslims and followers of traditional African religions. Bantu peoples probably settled in the region before the 5th century. The Kingdom of the Congo came into being in the 14th century. In the 19th century the region became a Belgian colony. After independence in 1960, the dictatorial Mobutu regime renamed the country Zaire. In 1997 the Democratic Republic of the Congo was proclaimed. The 1997 civil war and the ongoing conflicts prevented the establishment of political and economic structures. Despite the natural wealth of raw materials, poverty and hunger are widespread. The domestic political situation is unstable due to the activities of rebel groups in the north and east of the country.

Media

The country has a liberal press law, but politicians have a great influence on reporting. Intimidation and reprisals, especially in conflict areas, encourage self-censorship. Journalists have been repeatedly killed while they are at work.

Press: Daily newspapers such as “La Référence Plus”, “Le Potentiel”, “L’Avenir”, “Le Phare”, “L’Observateur” and “Le Palmarès” only have a circulation of a few thousand and appear almost exclusively in Kinshasa.

News agency: Agence Congolaise de Presse (ACP, state).

Broadcasting: The national broadcaster Radio-Télévision Nationales du Congo (RTNC) operates the radio station “La Voix du Congo” (French, various national languages) and “Télévision Congolaise” (RTNC 1 and 2). The UN-financed »Radio Okapi« is also received nationwide. There are also around 200 other radio stations. Radio France International (RFI) and BBC World Service serve primarily as news channels. Of around 50 private TV channels, “Digital Congo”, “Radio Télévision Groupe L’Avenir” (RTG @) and “Raga TV” are the most widespread.

Telecommunications: In the metropolitan area, the electronic infrastructure for mobile communications and the Internet is well developed.
