As a result of the First World War, Hungary lost around two thirds of its former territory and over half of its former population. Towards the end of World War II, Soviet troops conquered the country. In 1949 Hungary became a communist “People’s Republic” modeled on the USSR. In the 1980s, reforms loosened the rigid communist system.
