Top High Schools in Alabama

Alabama is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States, bordered by Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, and Mississippi to the west. The state has 67 counties and 137 school districts. Each county is governed by its own county commission, and most counties have their own school board as well. The counties are divided into three classes (A-C), depending on population size and financial status. Class A counties have a population of over 100,000 and are considered to be the most populous; Class B counties have a population between 50,000 and 100,000; and Class C counties have a population below 50,000. Each of these classes has different requirements for taxation and other services.

The majority of Alabama‘s 137 school districts are organized on a county-wide basis but there are some exceptions such as Birmingham City Schools which operates independently from any county or district boundaries. All public schools in Alabama must meet certain state standards as set forth by the Alabama State Department of Education. These standards include testing requirements for students in grades 3-8 as well as graduation requirements for high school students. Additionally, all public schools must provide an adequate level of education services including special education programs for students with disabilities or special needs.
