United States Senate
The Senate is effectively the upper house of the US Congress. It ensures equal representation (two deputies) from each state. Thus, in the US Senate there are one hundred deputies, who are called senators.
Senators are elected for six years, but a third of the senators’ term ends every two years. Thus, every two years the Senate is renewed by a third (although nothing prevents a senator from being re-elected). Elections to the Senate are held simultaneously with the elections of congressmen. To become a member of the Senate, a candidate must be a US citizen for at least nine years, be at least thirty years of age, and reside in the state from which he is elected.
The Senate considers bills that have already passed through the House of Representatives and approves or rejects them. In addition, the Senate gives consent to the ratification of international treaties, approves the appointment of judges of the Supreme Court and senior officials of the federal government.
It is the Senate that decides on the impeachment (removal from office) of the President and judges of the Supreme Court.
The President of the United States Senate is the Vice President of the United States of America. It does not take part in Senate votes, except in cases where the votes of senators are divided in half.
The Senate is located in the north wing of the US Capitol.
