Iran Overview
Iran is an Islamic republic in the Middle East with the nine million metropolis of Tehran as its capital. The country is four times the size of Germany. The Zagros Mountains and the Elburs Mountains frame a central highland with deserts that are hostile to life. Summers are dry and hot in the highlands, warm and humid on the Caspian Sea , and hot and humid in the lowlands of the Persian Gulf. Most of the precipitation falls on the northern edge of the Elbe, and winter can be very severe in the mountains of the north. There are frequent earthquakes.
Tehran and the northern flank of the Elbe are the most densely populated regions. Two thirds of the country are almost uninhabited. Iran is a multi-ethnic state, half of the population are Persians, the largest minority with a quarter of the population are Azerbaijanis. The official language is New Persian, called Farsi. Ten languages are spoken nationwide: other Iranian languages and various Turkic languages. 5 million Iranians live abroad. The Shiite Islam is the state religion.
Iran, called Persia until 1934, looks back on a long history. In ancient times , Persian empires comprised large parts of the Middle East and Central Asia. Persian literature, art, and architecture flourished after the Muslim Arabs’ conquest in the 7th century. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the ruling dynasty of the Safavids made Iran a great power. In the 19th century, the country became the plaything of major European powers. The Shahs of the Pahlavi Dynasty (1925–79) modernized the country and made it a regional power in the Middle East.
Rich deposits of oil and natural gas form the basis of the state-controlled economy. One tenth of the national area is used for arable farming.
Iran is an authoritarian state with democratic elements. Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 it has been under the rule of Shiite clergymen, the “Ayatollahs”. Islamic principles determine the law, the laws and the life of society. The President and Parliament are elected by the people. But their power is limited. Conflicts with the USA and Iran’s nuclear program led to international punitive measures against the Islamic Republic.

The natural flora inside is sparse. The foothills and the mountains in the northwest were originally forested; Today the trees are almost everywhere degraded to loose woody formations, only on the Caspian Sea there is a species-rich forest. About 55% of the area is desert.
