Papua New Guinea Overview
Papua New Guinea, a state in the western Pacific Ocean, Oceania, which is the eastern part of the island. Includes New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago and other islands. The majority of the population consists of Papuans, who are divided into more than 700 language groups (Papuan languages). Large parts of the country are covered by tropical rainforest. Export goods are copper ores, gold, palm oil, tea, coffee, cocoa and copra.
History: The state formed from the former Australian territory of Papua and the trust territory of New Guinea became independent as a parliamentary monarchy in the Commonwealth in 1975.
Education
The beginnings of the school system in Papua New Guinea go back to the church missions. Even today, the large churches still make a significant contribution to the educational offer, but the number of schools and teachers, especially in rural areas, is insufficient. There is no general compulsory education; The language of instruction is English. The school system is divided into a six-year primary school and a two-year secondary school (four-year Provincial High School and two-year National High School). There are four state and two private universities; i.a. the National University of Papua New Guinea (founded in 1965) in Port Moresby; and the Technical University (founded in 1965) in Lae.
