Italy Overview
Italy, officially Italian Repubblica Italiana, state in southern Europe with (2018) 60.4 million residents; The capital is Rome.
Italy includes part of the southern cape of the Alps, the Po Valley, the Apennine Peninsula, the islands of Sicily, Sardinia and several smaller archipelagos. The peninsula is almost 1,000 km long and 130–250 km wide. Italy is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the east, south and west and borders France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia in the north; San Marino and Vatican City are within the Italian territory.
Politics
According to the constitution adopted by the constituent assembly on December 22nd, 1947 and which came into force on January 1st, 1948 (revised several times), Italy is a parliamentary-democratic republic. The head of state is the president, who is mainly entrusted with representative tasks and is elected by both houses of parliament and 3 representatives from each region for a period of 7 years (re-election possible). The president has the right to dissolve parliament and appoint the prime minister and has a suspensive veto right in the legislative process. The legislature lies with the bicameral parliament (legislative period 5 years), consisting of the Senate (Senato; 315 senators and a variable number of appointed members, some for life) and the House of Representatives (Camera dei Deputati; maximum 630 members). Both houses of parliament have the same right of initiative and decision-making. The President of the Senate is also the deputy of the State President. In the 2006–13 elections, a proportional representation system with a majority bonus and differentiated threshold clauses applied. Following the adoption of the 2017 electoral reform, the House of Representatives and Senate will be elected with a mixture of majority and proportional representation. 64% of the seats in both chambers are determined via electoral lists in the proportional system, 36% of the seats are awarded to direct candidates in constituencies in a majority procedure. Italian voters abroad elect twelve MPs and six Senatorial seats. A three percent clause applies to individual parties and a ten percent clause applies to party alliances.
The executive body is the government, chaired by the Prime Minister. The President appoints the head of government and, on his proposal, the other members of the cabinet.
The Constitutional Court (Corte Costituzionale), established in 1956, monitors compliance with the constitution.A third of its 15 judges are appointed by the President, elected by both chambers of parliament or appointed from among the judges of the Supreme Courts.
