More about Barbados

Constitution

According to the constitution of November 30, 1966, Barbados is a parliamentary monarchy in the Commonwealth. The head of state and nominal owner of executive power is the British crown, which is represented by a governor-general appointed by it. Prime Minister, as the head of the executive, is the representative of the majority party in the House of Representatives (30 seats; election every 5 years). The second chamber of parliament, the Senate, has 21 members appointed by the Governor General.

Law

The jurisprudence follows the English common law. At the head of the judiciary is a Supreme Court with a High Court and a Court of Appeal; Magistrate courts for civil and criminal matters are subordinate to him. In 2005, the Royal Privy Council in London was replaced by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), based in Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago), as the highest appeal body.

Flag and emblem

The national flag is a tricolor in the colors blue-yellow-blue with a trident in the middle. Blue stands for the colors of the sky and the sea, the yellow stripe for the sandy beaches. The trident as a symbol of the sea god Neptune refers again to the location in the sea. – The coat of arms was created on December 21, 1965 by Queen Elisabeth II. awarded and shows in the golden shield a natural fig tree (Ficus barbatus), after which the Portuguese named the island, and in each of the two corners of the shield a red flower of the orchid “Pride of Barbados”. The top coat of arms is a stech helmet with a gold-red helmet cover, above which two sugar cane stalks held by one arm cross. The pelican and dolphin serve as shield holders. A banner with the motto “Pride and Industry” unfolds under the coat of arms.

National holiday

November 30th commemorates independence in 1966.

Administration

Barbados is divided into 11 boroughs that are administered directly by the central government.

Parties

As part of a multiparty system, the Barbados Labor Party (BLP) and the Democratic Labor Party (DLP) dominate.
