Jamaica Overview
Jamaica, Central American state and third largest island in the Greater Antilles. The mountainous island has a tropical and humid climate. Sugar cane, bananas, citrus fruits, tobacco, cocoa and aromatic plants are grown on the coast and on the mountain slopes. Bauxite is mined and processed as the most important export good. However, the greatest income comes from tourism. Three quarters of the population is black.
History: Jamaica was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1494 and settled by Spaniards from 1509. A British colony from 1655, Jamaica was one of the largest trading centers for the slave trade in the 17th century. In 1962, Jamaica gained independence as a parliamentary monarchy in the Commonwealth.

Location
Jamaica is separated from Cuba, 145 km to the north, by the Cayman Rift; the distance to Haiti (in the east) is 160 km. The island is mainly occupied by mountainous land, the incised coastal plains are partly swampy. About 60% of the island surface consists of up to 900 m high, strongly karstified limestone plateaus (in the northwest, in the inaccessible Cockpit Country also cone karst; in the northeast John Crow Plateau). The economically important bauxite is stored in the karst hollow forms. The highest peaks are mainly in the east of the island in the mountain range of the Blue Mountains (Blue Mountain Peak 2 256 m above sea level), which, like the Central Range (950 m above sea level) in the middle of the island, belongs to the alpinotype orogeny of the American cordillera system.
Climate
The climate is tropical and humid with a rainy season from May to November. On the north-eastern slope there is an annual rainfall of 2,500–3,000 mm, with a maximum of more than 5,000 mm, and on the south side in the lee of the Blue Mountains below 1,000 mm. The mean daytime temperature is 28 ° C in winter and 30 ° C in summer. Again and again, tropical cyclones cause great damage.
Vegetation
Apart from the evergreen rainforest and the mountain and cloud forest in the Blue Mountains and the Central Range, the original vegetation has been largely destroyed by humans, so that the limestone plateaus are now largely covered by grass corridors instead of the former rain-green wet and dry forests. On the coasts, mangroves and coconut palms mainly determine the vegetation. Typical are the guaiac tree (Guajacum officinale), which provides the pockwood, and the mahou (Sterculia caribaea), the country’s national tree.
