  • Sitting Bull (Sitting Bull, ca. 1831-1890) – the leader of the Indians who organized and led the resistance to the US government. Born in South Dakota.
  • Crazy Horse (c. 1840–1877) was a prominent military leader of the Lakota Indians who fought the US Army. Born in South Dakota.
  • Mary Collins (Mary Collins, 1846–1920) was a writer, missionary, and Native American rights activist. Born in Illinois, but later lived in South Dakota.
  • James “Scotty” Philip (1858–1911) was a pastoralist and politician. Known as “The Man Who Saved the Buffalo” for his role in saving the American bison from extinction. Born in Scotland, but later lived in South Dakota.
  • Mary “Mamie” Shields Pyle (Mary “Mamie” Shields Pyle, 1866–1949) was one of the leaders of the suffragist movement. Born in New Jersey, but later lived in South Dakota.
  • Niels Ebbesen Hansen (1866–1950) was a botanist and agronomist. Born in Denmark, but later lived in South Dakota.
  • Zitkala-Sha (Zitkala-Sa, 1876–1938) was a writer, translator, musician and teacher. One of the most influential Indian activists of the twentieth century. She was born on the Yankton Indian Reservation.
  • Oscar Micheaux (1884-1951) – writer, film director and producer. Born in Illinois but later lived in South Dakota.
  • Ernest Orlando Lawrence ( 1901–1958) was an eminent physicist. Born in the town of Canton.
  • Hubert Horace Humphrey Jr. (Hubert Horatio Humphrey Jr., 1911-1978) – 38th Vice President of the United States. Born in the village of Wallace.
  • Oscar Howe (1915-1983) is a well-known artist. Born in Joe Creek, Crow Creek Indian Reservation.
  • Joseph Jacob Foss (Joseph Jacob Foss, 1915-2003) – military pilot, politician, first commissioner of the American Football League. Born in Sioux Falls.
  • George Lee “Sparky” Anderson (George Lee “Sparky” Anderson, 1934-2010) – famous baseball player, coach and manager. Born in the town of Bridgewater.
