  • The first historic session of Southern Illinois Normal University was a summer institute, with a first faculty of eight members and an enrollment of 53 students.
  • It was chartered in 1869 as Southern Illinois Normal University and opened that same year. It grew to become one of the largest teachers colleges in the state.
