More about Ukraine

Economy

The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 led to a dramatic economic slump in Ukraine. The situation only improved in the 2000s. But the country is still one of the European countries with the lowest economic output per resident. The government delayed market economy reforms. Privatizations remained incomplete and often favored entrepreneurs with good political contacts (“oligarchs”). Legal uncertainty and corruption hamper investments. The consequences of the global financial and economic crisis led to a recession from 2009 that was not overcome until 2016. Since 2014, the country has received international aid loans that accelerated reforms, e. B. in the banking sector, energy sector, health care and in pension policy.

Ukraine has fertile black earth soils, called Chernozem. Arable farming is practiced on three quarters of the usable area. The main crops grown are sunflowers, potatoes and beets. The country was considered the “granary” of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. The wealth of mineral resources – especially manganese, iron, titanium, coal, graphite and mercury – favored intensive industrialization (mining, iron and steel industry) from the 1930s, especially in the Donets coal basin (Donbass), but also along the Dnieper and around many area capitals. Today, the coal and steel sector is severely affected by a lack of competitiveness and the war in eastern Ukraine. Economic pillars are mechanical engineering, vehicle construction and traffic engineering (e.g. Juschmasch) as well as aircraft production (Antonow), the armaments industry (Juschnoje) and the chemical industry. The electronics and IT sectors benefit from the generally good level of training. 60% of the workforce now works in the service sector.

Nuclear power plants at four locations in the west and south continue to play a major role in energy supply despite the Chernobyl reactor disaster. They cover more than half of the national electricity needs. Ukraine was of paramount importance as a transit country for natural gas from Russia to Central and Western Europe. Since the 1990s, however, there have been repeated conflicts with Russia over the payment and scope of deliveries. By the end of 2019, the Russian company Gazprom intends to completely stop natural gas transit through Ukraine. The Odessa – Illichivsk – Yuzhne complex on the Black Sea is the largest of the high-sea ports in Ukraine. Check themakeupexplorer to see Ukraine Literature.
