More about Poland

Culture

Poland is a country with a long cultural history. The country experienced its first heyday from the 15th century. With increasing prosperity, art and science developed. One of the pioneering scientists is N. Copernicus, who proved that it is the earth that revolves around the sun and not the other way around. Magnificent buildings were built in rich cities such as Warsaw, Krakow and Gdansk. Master builders from Central Europe and Italy enriched early Polish architecture. Polish painting appeared in the 19th century through the history paintings by Jan Matejko (* 1838, † 1893). At the turn of the century, new art movements such as symbolism were foundand constructivism received great attention. In the post-war period, Polish graphic artists developed their own poster art, which was extremely successful internationally.

Adam Mickiewicz (* 1798, † 1893) became Poland’s national poet through the verse epic »Pan Tadeusz«. Henryk Sienkiewicz (* 1846, † 1916) received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1905 for his novel “Quo vadis?” Three other Polish writers were awarded the Nobel Prize. The writer Stanisław Lem (* 1921, † 2006) is one of the best-known science fiction authors with classics such as “Solaris” (1961) or “The Invincible” (1967). During the communist regime, literary figures suffered from the restrictions of state censorship.

With directors such as R. Polanski and Andrzej Wajda (* 1926, † 2016) Poland has risen to become one of the leading film countries. With »Pan Tadeusz« (1999, by A. Wajda) and »Quo vadis?« (2001; by Jerzy Kawalerowicz, * 1922, † 2007) the filmmakers take up Polish literary sources.

Probably the most famous composer in Poland is F. Chopin. He wrote almost exclusively piano pieces which also incorporate elements of Polish folk music. He made folk dances such as the lively mazurka, the dignified polonaise and the spirited Krakowiak world famous.

Jazz plays a special role in Polish musical life. It saw itself as an expression of the Polish striving for freedom and was not welcomed by the communist regime in post-war Poland. Nevertheless, it enjoyed enormous popularity and developed an independent Polish style (»Polski Jazz«) in the 1950s. In popular music, songs in the Polish language are preferred.

Winter sports play a major role in sport, especially ski jumping. The most important winter sports resort in Poland is Zakopane in the High Tatras. Poland is one of the leading countries in speedway motorcycle racing. Ball sports such as soccer, volleyball, handball, basketball and tennis are also very popular. The Polish national soccer team won the gold medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Former German national player Miroslav Klose (* 1978) is of Polish-German origin. The star striker Robert Lewandowski (* 1988) plays in the German Bundesliga.

The most famous Polish scientist is the chemist and physicist M. Curie. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1903 and 1911 for her groundbreaking research in the field of radioactivity.
