More about Portugal

Portugal includes the western part of the Iberian Peninsula (bordering the Atlantic Ocean and Spain), the Azores and Madeira.

Portugal covers about one sixth of the area of the Iberian Peninsula. With a width of about 150 km, it has a north-south extension of over 550 km. The southern edge of the Iberian Scheidegebirge together with the Tejo form the border between the mountainous Atlantic northern Portugal and the flat Mediterranean southern Portugal. The north consists of the coastal lowlands of the Beira Litoral and Estremaduras, the Iberian Scheidegebirge and the north and east bordering high Portugal; South Portugal is divided into the Alentejo and Algarve landscape areas.

The floe of the Serra da Estrêla in the Iberian Scheidegebirge, raised to 1,991 m above sea level, forms the highest point in mainland Portugal. The landscape of high Portugal (400–800 m above sea level) and the Alentejo (below 400 m) are defined by wide, differently high hull areas into which the rivers have cut. Frequent earthquakes testify to the persistence of tectonic processes in the Tejos Basin and the Algarve. The coast has few natural harbors; the country borders the sea either in straight cliffs or in shallow alluvial coasts. Main rivers are (the lower reaches of) Minho, Duero, Tejo, Guadiana; Sado and Mondego are exclusively Portuguese watercourses. The seasonal and episodic fluctuations in the water flow in these rivers are among the highest on earth.

Administration

Portugal is divided into 18 administrative districts (mainland) and 2 autonomous regions (Azores and Madeira) with a total of 308 counties (Municipios) and over 3,000 municipalities (Freguesias).

Education

In 1986 a new legal framework for the Portuguese education system was created and the reforms were intensified from 1990 onwards. The relationship between public and private sponsorship of educational institutions is different in the individual educational areas. Private schools are subject to state supervision and are partly supported by public funds. There is a nine-year compulsory schooling from the age of 6 and a publicly funded pre-school offer (not compulsory). The basic education is free of charge and is divided into three consecutive cycles (4 years, 2 years, 3 years). Further education takes place at general and vocational secondary schools (three years). The permeability between both educational paths, which lead to the general Abitur or the Abitur with professional qualification is given. There are (at the end of 2012) 15 state and 39 private universities as well as numerous other higher education institutions. The oldest continuously existing university is the University of Coimbra (founded in Lisbon in 1290, in Coimbra since 1308); The University of Lisbon (founded in 1288, rebuilt in 1911) also dates back to the 13th century. – The adult literacy rate (15 year olds and older) is 94.8%.
