More about Morocco
Morocco, French Le Maroc [ləma r ɔ k] or Le Royaume du Maroc, officially Arab Al-Mamlaka al-Maghribijja [ “Western Empire”], German Kingdom of Morocco, country in northwest Africa (2018) 36 million residents; The capital is Rabat.
Tourism
Morocco is the most popular travel destination in North Africa. Tourism generates a third of foreign exchange revenues. The majority of the (2016) 10.3 million foreign visitors come from France, Spain, Great Britain and Germany. Travel destinations include ancient ruins from Phoenician, Punic and Roman times, the four royal cities Rabat, Fez, Marrakech and Meknes with their architectural sights and the oriental flair, extensive sandy beaches, the dunes of the Sahara with the oases in the south and snow-capped mountains. Winter sports and summer resorts for Moroccans are Ifrane in the Middle and Oukaïmedene in the High Atlas.
Vegetation
In the irrigated area – outside of the cultivated land – Mediterranean shrub vegetation prevails, with over 600 mm annual rainfall forests (with holm oak, Kermes oak, cork oak, cedar, juniper, Aleppo pine), thorn cushion plants above the tree line (at 3,150 m above sea level). In the southern coastal area there are large stocks of Argania spinosa (Moroccan ironwood tree), Berber thuja and jujube. Beyond the mountain system, the vegetation is only sparse (sparse juniper trees; loose dry steppe communities); in the east large areas are overgrown with alfa grass.
The increasing overloading of natural resources through grazing, the use of firewood and plowing for rain-fed agriculture leads to desertification phenomena.
Transportation
The transport network is particularly well developed in the north and northwest. After truck traffic, the most important mode of transport for goods transport is the railroad (route length: 2,110 km). The railway line from Marrakech via Casablanca to Tangier (with a free port zone) has connections to Safi (phosphate export port) and to Fès-Oujda. Over two thirds of the 58,400 km long road network are paved. Shipping plays an important role. The main ports, including Casablanca, Mohammedia, Jorf Lasfar (phosphate export), Safi, Agadir and Tangier, are on the Atlantic coast. The most important Mediterranean port is Nador immediately south of the Spanish enclave of Melilla. By far the most important of the ten international airports is Casablanca, while Agadir, Marrakech and Tangier are of particular importance for tourism.
