Economy
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has (2018) 607 720 residents. Almost half of the population are foreigners. That is the highest proportion of foreigners in the EU. Most of the immigrants come from Europe, e.g. from Portugal, France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Spain and Great Britain. The focus of the settlement is the south of the country with traditional industrial locations. Nine out of ten Luxembourgers live in metropolitan areas, most of them in the capital. Luxembourg has three official languages: Luxembourgish, a Moselle-Franconian dialect, French and German. The Luxembourgers are multilingual. The trilingual school tuition, the large number of commuters from neighboring countries and the employees of European institutions and international banks all contribute to this.
Luxembourg has an extensive social security system financed by taxes and membership fees, which includes health, pension and unemployment insurance. The life expectancy of Luxembourgers is among the ten highest in the world.
Like the grand ducal family, around three quarters of Luxembourg’s people are of the Catholic faith. 2% of the population is Protestant, 0.1% are Jewish. Around 2% are Muslims. A quarter does not belong to any denomination. The Luxembourg Constitution guarantees freedom of religion. The separation of state and religion has been in effect since 2016. The state no longer pays the salaries of newly appointed clergymen. In schools, the subject of “Life and Society” replaces the religious instruction that was customary up to that point.
For environmental reasons and to avoid the frequent traffic jams in and around Luxembourg (city), local public transport (tram, funicular, railway) is being expanded. From March 2020 it will be free for everyone in Luxembourg.
Politics and law
Luxembourg is a parliamentary monarchy headed by the Grand Duke. Grand Duke Henri (* 1955) has been head of state since 2000. He has extensive powers. He can z. B. Propose laws and dissolve Parliament, which consists of 60 members. The people elect the MPs for a five-year term. The Grand Duke appoints a government former based on the election results. It forms a cabinet that has a parliamentary majority. The Prime Minister heads the cabinet. The Council of State, made up of 21 members appointed for life by the Grand Duke, has an advisory function and at the same time forms the highest administrative court.
The government usually consists of several parties. Since October 2018, the liberal politician Xavier Bettel (* 1973) from the Democratic Party (DP) Prime Minister. He is once again leading the three-party coalition made up of liberals, social democrats and the Greens that has ruled Luxembourg since 2013. One of the government’s most important projects is a new transport concept. From March 2020, the population can use buses and trains (exception: 1st class) free of charge. Park-and-ride parking spaces at the city limits and an electric tram are to relieve the capital of traffic. In addition, the cycle path network will be doubled to a length of 1,100 km. The commuter flat rate was reduced at the same time. The aim is to encourage car commuters to switch to the capital by bike or public transport. In addition, the minimum wage was increased and Europe Day on May 9th was introduced as an additional public holiday.
There are public and private, Luxembourg and international schools in the Grand Duchy. The children go to preschool for two years at the age of four and then go to elementary school for six years. Luxembourgish is the language of instruction in pre-school and in the 1st and 2nd grade. School year. French is taught from the 1st grade and German from the 2nd grade. Finally, the seven-year secondary school follows. It has three branches, one leads to university studies, the second prepares for professional life or also enables a degree, the third consists of practical vocational training. Luxembourg has had its own university since 2003.
