Philippines Overview
Philippines, state and archipelago (with 7,100 islands) in Southeast Asia, the northern part of the Malay Archipelago. The capital Manila is located on the largest island of Luzon (104 688 km 2). Other large islands are Mindanao, Samar, Negros, Palawan, Panay, Mindoro and Leyte. The population is characterized by ethnic and linguistic diversity; about 80% are Catholics, the Muslims (especially in Mindanao) demand autonomy.
The islands are mountainous, with partly still active volcanoes; earthquakes occur frequently. In the hot, humid monsoon climate, a.o. Rice, corn, sugar cane and coconut trees. The Philippines are the largest copra producer on earth. In terms of mineral resources, they have copper, iron, manganese, chromium, gold and petroleum. The industry processes domestic raw materials, the textile industry and the electronics sector are also important. Fishing is also extensive.
History: In 1521 the Portuguese Fernão de Magalhães was the first European to reach the islands. In the second half of the 16th century, the Philippines became Spanish and received its current name (after King Philip II). In 1898 they fell to the United States. After the Japanese occupation in World War II, they gained their independence in 1946.
In 1986, President Ferdinand Marcos, who had ruled with corruption and martial law since 1965, was replaced by Corazon Aquino, who remained President until 1992. President Fidel Ramos (1992–98) sought reconciliation with the Islamic insurgents in Mindanao and ended a 20-year civil war that had claimed more than 100,000 lives. The threat from Islamist terrorist groups persisted even afterwards. 2001-10 Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (* 1947) was president. In 2010, Benigno Aquino (* 1960, † 2021), the son of the politician Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, who was murdered in 1983, and the former President Corazon Aquino, won the election with an outstanding result. In 2016, the population named Rodrigo Duterte (* 1945), the long-time mayor of Davao, as his successor.
Climate
Since no place is more than 100 km away from the coast, the climate is consistently maritime. In addition, the location of the islands in the low tropical latitudes causes slight regional, seasonal and daily temperature fluctuations. The annual rainfall of around 1,700–3,400 mm in the most important production areas is sufficient for the cultivation of useful plants. At the lower limit of the for growing rice Only parts of the central Visayas (Cebu: 1 431 mm) and southwest Mindanao (Zamboanga: 1 524 mm) are subject to the necessary precipitation of 1,500 mm. Dry periods, which are characteristic of most monsoon countries in South and Southeast Asia, are spatially limited in the Philippines to the western parts of the country (especially western Luzon, Negros) and are overall less pronounced. In most parts of the country, the rainfall is even distributed over the whole year. Overall, these factors, including the high average humidity (> 80% per year for most parts of the country) together with the very fertile soils in the main cultivation areas (including on volcanic rocks) enable continuous cultivation in most regions with mostly two, and with additional irrigation even three harvests a year. Typhoons, of which only Mindanao (exception: northeast) is spared. In November 2013, the Visayas were hit by typhoon “Haiyan”, which claimed thousands of lives.
