Rwanda Overview

Rwanda is a state in East Africa. The capital is called Kigali. With an area about the size of Belgium, Rwanda is one of the smallest and at the same time most densely populated countries in Africa. The land has no direct access to the sea. In the west is the great Kiwu Lake. In the north-west lies the Virunga Volcanoes. Most of the country consists of a hilly plateau with rather cool temperatures.

The population essentially consists of three groups that have mixed with one another today: the Hutu, the majority of the population who traditionally exclusively engage in agriculture, the Tutsi, who were mainly cattle breeders, and the Twa mountain people, who lived from gathering and hunting. The common language is Kinyaruanda, the largest religion Christianity. 40% of the people live in absolute poverty in rural areas, where they provide for themselves with agricultural income. Important export goods are coffee and tea, as well as the mineral mining products kasserite and coltan. One source of income is gorilla and wildlife tourism.

The population groups in the Kingdom of Rwanda from the 15th century until the colonial era have the same language, the same social structures and the same cultural background. Only the German and Belgian colonial rulers from the 1890s onwards assigned ethnic characteristics to the Hutu and Tutsi groups. A Tutsi was a person who was rich in cattle. In 1962 the country became independent. The Hutu assumed political leadership. In 1994, centuries of tension between Hutu and Tutsi culminated in genocide in which around 1 million Tutsi and moderate Hutu were killed. The UN blue helmets stationed in the region to monitor peace were prohibited from intervening with weapons in the conflict. After that, Rwanda reorganized itself as a state. With the first free elections in 2003, the country stabilized politically and economically. Important social tasks are the coming to terms with the genocide and the sustainable reconciliation of the Hutu and Tutsi.
