Senegal Overview

Senegal, state on the West African coast, whose territory in the southern part surrounds the state of Gambia. The population consists mainly of Sudan peoples (including Wolof, Fulbe, Tukulor). Senegal has a tropical climate. The north and northeast lie in the Sahel, the rest of the country in the greater Sudan landscape. The main line of business is agriculture (arable farming, especially peanuts and cotton, and pasture farming). In addition, coastal fishing and phosphate mining are important. Tourism plays an important role on the coast and in the national parks.

History: From 1446 Portuguese established trading establishments at the Senegal estuary, followed by the Dutch in the 16th century. In the 17th century, the French settled in what is now Senegal, and in 1854 they proclaimed the colony of Senegal. In 1960 the country became independent as a republic.
