Sierra Leone Overview
Sierra Leone, Republic in West Africa; the population is made up of 20 ethnic groups. The country is divided into a damp coastal plain and a savannah highland in the interior. The climate is tropical with a rainy season in summer. Coffee and cocoa are grown for export. Although Sierra Leone has rich mineral resources, especially diamonds, rutile (titanium dioxide) and bauxite, it is one of the poorest countries in Africa as a result of the civil war (1991–2002). The main ports are Freetown and Pepel.
History: The area was discovered by the Portuguese in the 15th century, who carried on the slave trade from there until the 18th century. In 1787 the English founded the Freetown colony for freed slaves. In 1808 Sierra Leone became a British crown colony. In 1961 it gained independence.

Population
The largest of the 20 ethnic groups are the Mende (26%) living in the eastern and central area and the Temne to the northwest(25%); on the north coast live the Limba (7%) and Susu, on the south coast the Sherbro and others. Around 10% of the population are descendants of liberated slaves (“Creoles”) who were settled on the Sierra Leone peninsula from Great Britain, Canada, the Caribbean, the USA and African countries from 1787 onwards. Most of them live in Freetown, the only major city in the country, and in the Western Province. Originally only spoken by them, Krio, an English interspersed with numerous Spanish, Portuguese, French and African loan words with its own syntax and phonetics, is a common language in Sierra Leone alongside Mende and Temne. In addition, minorities of Europeans and Asians live in the country. The proportion of the urban population is 41%.
Social: The people in Sierra Leone live in oppressive poverty. The medical infrastructure is mainly concentrated in Freetown; in the rural areas there is a great lack of medical care, medical facilities and reliable drinking water supplies.

The constitution guarantees freedom of religion; all religious communities are legally equal. Different sources provide different research results on religious affiliation: According to this, between 60 and 70% of the population are Sunni Muslims from the Maliki school of law. Christian churches belong to around 20-30%, of which over two thirds are Protestant denominations (especially Methodists and Pentecostals) as well as smaller parts of the Catholic Church (according to their own information, approx. 5% of the population; Archdiocese of Freetown and Bo with three suffragan bishops) and the Anglican Church ( belonging to the province of West Africa).
A not inconsiderable part of the population (estimated between 5 and up to 30%) adheres to traditional African religions, with many people combining indigenous religious practices with a belief in Islam or Christianity. Secret societies, in which both men (Poro) and women have come together, play a major role in both religious and social terms.
