Due to its location at the intersection of important shipping and air routes, Singapore has developed into one of the most important transport centers in Southeast Asia. Singapore is one of the most important ports (with an attached free trade zone) in container handling worldwide. In addition, Singapore is the cruise hub of Southeast Asia. The Changi International Airport, which opened in 1981 and was built on a raised area, is one of the largest and most modern in Asia. The national airline Singapore Airlines is one of the world’s leading medium-sized airlines with over 100 aircraft. The national territory is connected to Malaysia by a 26 km long railway line, but mainly by two highways. The length of the road network is 9,246 km. Since 1987 there has been a “Mass Rapid Transit” rapid transit railway (constant expansion).
