Slovenia Overview
Slovenia borders in the north on Austria (Carinthia and Styria), in the northeast on Hungary, in the east and south on Croatia, in the west on Italy and (south of Trieste) with a coastline of around 46 km on the Adriatic Sea.
Slovenia is predominantly mountainous country in the catchment area of the upper Sava; In the northwest it is part of the Southern Limestone Alps, namely the Julian Alps (in Triglav 2,864 m above sea level) and – north of the Save – the Karawanken (over whose ridge the border to Carinthia runs), to those in the southeast the Steiner Alps (in Grintavec 2,558 m above sea level) connect.
To the south, the Limestone Alps merge into the heavily karstified and therefore sparsely populated mountain ranges and plateaus of the Dinaric Mountains (karst with large caves, including the Škocjan caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site); in the south to the Krainer Schneeberg (Snežnik; 1,796 m above sea level).
The northeast is covered by the foothills of the Styrian Rand Mountains (Central Alps), the Bacher Mountains (Pohorje) south of the Drau and between the Drau and Mur the Windischen Bühel (Slovenske Gorice) with the Possruck (Kozjak) mountain range north of the Drau and in the extreme northeast (north of the Mur) the Goričko mountain range (in Serdiški breg 418 m above sea level) as the foothills of the Graz mountain range. South of the Save and southeast of Ljubljana, the fertile and densely populated hilly area of the Lower Carniola (Dolenjska) extends to the Uskoken Mountains; to the south of it, the outskirts of the Savo Lowlands form the extreme south-east of the country.

The three gold stars above are taken from an old coat of arms of the County of Cilli and today symbolize the three historical years 1918, 1945 and 1991 for Slovenia. The two blue wavy lines under the mountain peaks represent the rivers Drava and Save.
