Population

Over 90% of the population belong to the Swazi Bantu people; the largest minorities are the Zulu and Tsonga. The population density is 79 residents / km 2. According to the economic structure, the majority of the Swazi live in villages and small settlements in the countryside; mostly in the middleveld. The degree of urbanization is only 21%. The only urban region is the capital Mbabane and the economic center Manzini. About 11% of the population live as contract workers in the Republic of South Africa.

Social: The biggest domestic political challenge in the country is the immune deficiency disease AIDS. The infection rate in adults (age group 15 to 49 years) is around 27.7%, one of the highest worldwide. Another problem is the unequal distribution of income and wealth: 70% of the population live below the poverty line.

Religion

There is freedom of religion. According to different sources, between 80 and 90% of the population are Christians: They belong to a majority of independent African churches (around 90 denominations, especially Zion Christians [»Zion Christian Church«] with an estimated 30-43% of the population) and Protestant denominations (15 in total) -34% of the population, especially Church of the Nazarene, Pentecostals, Methodists, Lutherans). The proportion of the population of Catholics (Diocese of Manzini, suffragan diocese of Johannesburg [Republic of South Africa]) is between 5 and 20%, that of Anglicans (Diocese of Eswatini with a bishopric in Mbabane; part of the Anglican Church of the Province of South Africa) is around 1%.

Non-Christian religious minorities form v. a. the Muslims (about 1–10% of the population), as well as Bahais and Hindus (East Africans, Indians). A population of around 10–20% is attributed to indigenous African religions.

Climate and vegetation

The subtropical climate in the mountain areas (highlands: forest plantations, savannas with winter pastures) is temperate and has a lot of rainfall; the Middleveld (grass and thorn bush savannahs), also well irrigated with around 1,000 mm of annual precipitation, is the main cultivation area. The Lowveld (dry savannahs) is hot and dry, there is extensive irrigation farming (especially sugar cane).
