Taiwan Overview

Taiwan [also ta ɪ va ː n] (Republic of China), Republic on the island of Taiwan (formerly Formosa) and a few other islands off the southeastern coast of China. The population consists mostly of Chinese who have immigrated from the mainland. Descendants of the Austronesian indigenous population (still around 430,000 people) settle in the mountains. The densely forested mountainous country, which rises to 3,952 m in the Yu Shan, supplies wood and camphor. Taiwan has coal, oil, natural gas, and gold in terms of natural resources. The main economic area is the fertile coastal land. The main agricultural products are rice, cane sugar, asparagus, mushrooms, bananas, pineapples and tea. Taiwan is one of the most important industrial countries in East Asia, especially because of its electrical and electronics industry. Another source of income is fishing. The main ports are Gaoxiong and Jilong.

History: Taiwan became Chinese in 1683, Japanese in 1895, and Chinese again in 1945. After the communists under Mao Zedong had ousted them from the mainland in the civil war, the Chinese bourgeois government, which was not recognized by all states, fled (Guomindang) to Taiwan in 1949 and founded the independent Republic of Taiwan (National China) here under President Chiang Kai-shek in 1950. 2008–16 was President Ma Ying-jeou (* 1950). For the first time since the end of the civil war, the two heads of state of China and Taiwan met in 2015. In 2016, Tsai Ing-wen (Cai Yingwen, * 1956) was elected President.

National symbols

The national flag was introduced as the flag of the Republic of China in 1928. After the founding of the republic, it was enshrined in the constitution in 1947. In the upper corner of the red cloth stands the twelve-pointed sun from the coat of arms in a blue field.

The coat of arms has been in use for the Chinese Republic since 1928 and was continued by the government that fled to the island of Taiwan after the revolution. It shows a twelve-pointed white sun on a blue background. The rays are not connected with the solar disk or with each other; they symbolize the twelve two-hour sections of the day and “incessant progress”. The representation corresponds to the symbol of the “future free China” and the “republican renewal” created by Sun Yat-sen for the Chinese Revolutionary League in 1906, later adopted by the Guomindang party.

The national holiday on October 10th (“double tenth”) commemorates the Wuhan uprising in 1911.
