United Arab Emirates Overview

United Arab Emirates, abbreviation UAE, federal association of seven autonomous sheikdoms (Emirates) on the Arabian Peninsula. Population

As citizens, native Arabs who work in the public service, as managers of their own businesses and as guarantors (“sponsors”) for foreign traders (foreigners are not allowed to own property or companies), form only a minority within the population (according to differing estimates between 11 and 15%).

Some nomads and settled farmers still live in the poorer emirates. The foreign workers (two thirds men without families) come mainly from India, Pakistan and other South and East Asian countries as well as from Arab countries bordering the Mediterranean. In addition, specialists from the USA and Europe (especially from Great Britain) work in the Emirates. The average population density (2017) is 117 residents / km 2 , but only about 1% of the country’s area is populated. With a degree of urbanization of 86%, the population is concentrated in the major port and emirate capitals.

Religion

The constitution defines Islam as the official religion, whereby the right to freely practice religion is not guaranteed by Islamic beliefs. The ruling houses emphasize their traditional ties to Sunni Islam.

About 76% of the total population, including all citizens, profess Islam. Around 85% of citizens are Sunnis from the Maliki and Hanbali schools of law , around 15% are Shiites (Imamites).

Significant religious minorities are Hindus and Buddhists (together about 9-15% of the population, mostly Hindus) and Christians (about 9-13% of the population). The majority of Christians belong to the Catholic Church (Apostolic Vicariate Southern Arabia [seat: Abu Dhabi]), the rest of the various Eastern Churches and the Anglican Church (Province of Jerusalem and Middle East); few Protestants.
