The largest city in the state is Albuquerque, which is home to about 560,000 people (thirty-second place in the list of the largest cities in the United States). Other major cities in New Mexico are Las Cruces (about 100,000 people), Rio Rancho (over 90,000 people), the state capital of Santa Fe (about 70,000 people) and Roswell (about 50,000 people).
New Mexico’s largest urban clusters have grown around Albuquerque (about 900,000 residents, fifty-seventh on the U.S. metropolitan area list) and Las Cruces (over 200,000 residents). More than half of the state’s population lives in these two agglomerations.
