Early History of Wyoming
In 1812, an expedition of the Pacific Fur Company led by Robert Stewart, returning to the US East from Oregon, discovered a pass in the Rocky Mountains in southwestern Wyoming, which received the name “South Pass” (South Pass, “South Pass”).
This is one of the lowest (2301 meters above sea level) points of the Continental Divide and one of the few places where westbound wagons could cross the Rocky Mountains. Later, it was through this pass that the “Oregon Trail” ran, the famous route along which thousands of migrants passed and drove from the Great Plains region of the United States to the Pacific coast, to the Oregon valleys. Branches from the “Oregon Trail” became the “Bozeman Road” (leading to Montana), “California Trail” (to Nevada and California), “Mormon Trail” (to Utah). Today the South Passage is a US National Historic Landmark.
One of the most famous landmarks on the Oregon Trail was Independence Rock, a huge (about forty meters high) granite rock.
From 1824 to 1840, in Wyoming, large fur companies repeatedly held “Rendezvous of the Rocky Mountains”, a kind of fair for fur hunters, where they sold their booty and replenished supplies.
In 1850, pioneer and hunter Jim Bridger discovered another convenient pass in the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming, which was later named after him. Bridger also explored the Yellowstone area, but his stories, like those of John Colter’s earlier descriptions, were dismissed as fiction.
