Interior plains

The Interior Plains is a huge area in the central part of the United States of America and Canada. The Interior Plains are located west of the Appalachians and extend into the Rocky Mountains.

The eastern part of the Interior Plains is called the ” Central (or Inner) Lowland “. It occupies mainly the territory of the states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri. The region is characterized by a flat relief, in some places with low smooth hills. The height of the lowland does not exceed 460 meters above sea level.

The western part is known as the ” Great Plains ” (or even just ” The Plains “). Here are located, in whole or in part, the states of Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, as well as the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. On the Great Plains, the relief gradually rises from the east to the west, reaching heights in the foothills up to more than 1,500 meters above sea level. Several provinces are distinguished in the region, including the Missouri Plateau (or Coto de Missouri, a large plateau that stretches along the Missouri River valley in North and South Dakota), the Black Hills (” Black Hills “, an isolated mountain range in South Dakota, the highest point is Mount Black Elk Peak, 2,207 meters above sea level), Colorado Piedmont (a hilly plain with altitudes up to 1,500 meters in the east of the state of the same name), the Edwards Plateau (a hilly plateau in central Texas) and others.

The territory of the Interior Plains, mostly covered with steppes, is also often called ” Prairies “, and according to the type of vegetation characteristic of the region, they distinguish between ” Tall grass prairie ” (eastern part of the region), ” Mixed prairie ” (central part) and ” Low grass prairie ” (western part).

The territory of the Interior Plains practically coincides with the basin of the Mississippi River (and its largest tributaries, the Missouri and Ohio).
