More about Latvia
Latvia borders the Baltic Sea to the west, the Gulf of Riga and Estonia to the north, Russia to the east, Belarus to the southeast and Lithuania to the south.
Latvia lies in the northwest of the glacial Eastern European Plain. Two large inland ice glaciers, which covered this area in the period 25,000–12,000 years ago, left behind a landscape shaped by the Ice Age with ground moraine and terminal moraine lines after their retreat; hilly heights and numerous lakes (Lubāns, Raznas, Usmassee) are their characteristic forms. In the west, Latvia has a long coastline that balances the Baltic Sea. South of the Riga Bay extends on both sides of the widely ramified Courland Aa the Semgallen Plain, which merges into the Central Lithuanian plains in the south. This plain is bounded by mountain ranges: in the west lie the Kurländische heights (up to 184 m above sea level), which drop to the northwest towards the depression of the lower Windau. In the east, the central lowland is bounded by the Mid-Levland ridge on the upper reaches of the Livonian Aa, the highest point of which is Gaising Mountain (Latvian Gaiziņa kalns), the highest point in Latvia, rising 311 m above sea level.
The Baltic ridge with the Lettgallen Heights extends to the east. The hilly and many lakes Endmoränenkette is in the south of the glacial valley of the Daugava intersected (Daugava). The large depression of Lake Lubānsee (Lake Lubahn) lies between the heights of Latgale and Central Ivory, which, at 80 km 2, is the largest of the 2,256 inland lakes in Latvia, which are mainly located in the east of the country. Latvia has a dense network of rivers. The largest river in the country is the Daugava, which flows 352 km through Latvia. It flows into the Baltic Sea in the urban area of Riga and is navigable in the lower reaches.
Climate
Due to the proximity to the Baltic Sea with the Riga Bay protruding deep into the mainland, large parts of Latvia are determined by the maritime climate. The coldest months are January (in the eastern part) and February (on the coast). The mean July temperature is 16.0 ° C on the coast and 17.5 ° C in the east, the mean temperature in January regionally corresponding to −3 ° C and −7 ° C, respectively. The mean annual precipitation on the coast and in the lowlands is between 550 and 600 mm, at altitudes between 700 and 800 mm.
Vegetation
More than half of the country is forested, a large part of the forest area is taken up by pine forests. Moist swamp forests in the river plains consist mainly of black alder, aspen and birch. Coniferous forests with yew trees and hazel undergrowth can be found in the Semgallen Plain and in some river valleys. Large forest massifs have survived on less fertile and moist soils, especially in the coastal lowlands, in the depression around the Windau and around the Usmassee. About 10% of the territory is poo. There are extensive swamps in the coastal lowlands and in the Lubānssenke; 42% of all moors are raised bogs. Most of the agriculturally usable areas are located in the fertile Semgallen Plain. Through the draining of swamps, they were considerably expanded in historical times. In the glacial valley of the Livonian Aa lies the 920 km 2 Gauja National Park.
