The state of North Carolina is located in the South of the United States and belongs to the South Atlantic States. North Carolina borders the states of Virginia to the north, Tennessee to the west, Georgia and South Carolina to the south.
North Carolina is located within two United States physiographic regions. The coastal plains and chains of barrier islands that stretch along the coast are part of the US Atlantic Lowlands. To the west, beyond the escarpment known as the “fall line”, the terrain rises, passing into the provinces of the Appalachian mountain system: first into the rolling Piedmont Plateau, and then into the Blue Ridge (“Blue Ridge”), Great Smoky, Black Mountains mountain ranges other.
Most of North Carolina has a humid subtropical climate, depending on proximity to the ocean and topography. The islands and the coast have very mild winters and warm summers; in the Piedmont Plateau region, the seasons are more pronounced, colder in winter and hotter in summer; in the mountains in the west, the climate is cooler. Most of the precipitation falls in the summer, in winter snow regularly occurs in the mountainous regions and from time to time in the central and eastern regions (although blizzards with heavy snowfalls occur here every few years). North Carolina, and especially its coastal regions, is often hit by hurricanes and tropical storms; tornadoes also occur in spring.
The first European navigator to see the coast of the state was the Italian Giovanni da Verrazano (Verrazzano), who sailed from North Carolina to Rhode Island in 1524. During his expedition, which took place in 1539-1540 from Florida to the Mississippi River, North Carolina was explored by the famous Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto. In 1567, another Spanish detachment led by Juan Pardo built the first European settlement on the lands of the state – Fort San Juan (although it lasted only about a year).
