Early History of the State of Hawaii
Despite the fact that Hawaii is by far the “youngest”, fiftieth US state, it has a very interesting history. Hawaii is one of four states that, before joining the United States of America, were, for a greater or lesser period of time, sovereign states (along with the Republic of Vermont, which existed for fourteen years, was created in 1836 by the Republic of Texas and for a very short time the former independent Republic of California), and only Texas and Hawaii were officially recognized in the world.
The first residents of Hawaii were Polynesians who moved here from other Pacific islands between 300 and 800 AD. They fished, grew bananas, coconuts, breadfruit and some other crops, and also raised pigs and chickens. The ancient Hawaiians were divided into castes, they had a fairly complex system of religious beliefs and social structure.
Among historians, there are several versions about which of the European explorers discovered Hawaii. It is assumed that already in 1555 the Spanish navigator Juan de Gaitan visited the islands, but it is reliably known that on January 18, 1778, the Resolution ship of the famous English traveler James Cook entered the Waimea harbor on the island of Kauai. Cook called the archipelago he discovered the “Sandwich Islands” (in honor of the first Lord of the British Admiralty, John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich) and soon went to the north Pacific Ocean, where, in particular, he explored the coast of the modern states of Oregon and Washington.
After the expedition of James Cook put Hawaii on geographical maps, European (mainly British) ships began to enter the islands more and more often. The result of this was a sharp decline in the population of Hawaii due to infectious diseases, to which the locals had no immunity.
