Nature of Alaska
The territory of the state of Alaska in comparison with the territory of the US continental states
The state of Alaska is located in the Western United States and belongs to the Pacific states. Alaska consists of the continental part and many islands – the Aleutian Islands, the Alexander Archipelago, the Pribylov Islands and many others.
Alaska is the largest of the US states, the area of Alaska is 1,717,854 km 2. The figure shows that if the contour of Alaska is superimposed on a map of the continental United States, then the westernmost point will be in California, and the easternmost point will be in Florida.
Alaska is home to the northernmost point of the United States (Cape Barrow, 71°23’20″N and 156°28’45″W) and the westernmost point of the fifty US states (Attu Island, Aleutian Islands, 52°55 ′14″ N and 172°26′16″ E)
Alaska borders on Canada in the east, and on Russia in the west (sea border along the Bering Strait).
The state of Alaska, like Hawaii, is an exclave of the United States, that is, a territory separated from its state, surrounded by several other states. From Alaska to the state of Washington nearest to it – about 800 kilometers of the territory of Canada.
Alaska is washed by the waters of two oceans, from the north – by the Arctic, from the south and west – by the Pacific. Alaska’s coastline is longer than all the rest of the US states combined. In Cook Inlet, near the largest city of Alaska, Anchorage, there are some of the highest tides in the world (up to twelve meters).
