United States House of Representatives

The House of Representatives is considered (albeit unofficially) to be the lower house of the US Congress. The states are represented in it in proportion to the population, but at the same time, even the smallest state has at least one deputy in the chamber. In total, there are 435 seats in the House of Representatives, its members are called congressmen.

The main task of the House of Representatives is the adoption of federal bills, which, after being approved by the Senate and signed by the President, become US laws.

Congressmen are elected for two years, elections are held every even year. To become a candidate for the House of Representatives, you must be at least twenty-five years old, have been a US citizen for at least seven years, and live in the state from which the candidate is elected to Congress.

The House of Representatives has the right to exclude elected deputies from its ranks, for this, at least two-thirds of congressmen must vote for the exclusion.

To direct the work of the House of Representatives, congressmen elect a speaker (chairman). Traditionally, it is the leader of the party that has the majority of seats in the House. The Speaker of the House of Representatives is the third person in the “line of succession” to the presidency, that is, it is he who becomes the President of the United States if the incumbent President and Vice President are unable to perform their duties.

The House of Representatives meets in the south wing of the US Capitol.
