Population of New Jersey

More than 8,800,000 people live in the state of New Jersey (the eleventh most populous state in the United States). The average population density in the state is about 460 people per km 2, New Jersey ranks first in the United States in this indicator. Most of the population lives in the area of New York and Philadelphia, as well as on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

The largest cities in the state of New Jersey are Newark (about 280,000 residents, sixty-eighth place in the list of the largest cities in the USA), Jersey City (about 250,000 residents), Paterson (about 150,000 residents), Elizabeth (about 125,000 residents), the state capital of Trenton (about 85,000 residents), Camden (about 80,000 residents) and Passaic (about 70,000 residents).

Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth and a number of New Jersey cities are part of the largest US metropolis – Greater New York, with a population of about nineteen million people. Several more settlements of the state (Camden, Vineland, Pennsville, etc.) belong to the Philadelphia metropolis, the fifth largest in the United States (about six million people).
