West Virginia Early History
In the postwar decades, mining became the backbone of West Virginia ‘s economy. The state had previously supplied limestone and rock salt, but it was at the end of the 19th century, thanks to the development of the railway network, that large-scale development of coal deposits began. At that time, it was coal that was the “main” type of fuel, steamships and steam locomotives worked on coal, metallurgical plants could not smelt iron and steel without coal, so the mineral wealth of the “Mountain State” was in great demand. In the fifties of the XX century, the use of mechanization in mines led to a strong increase in unemployment and a decrease in the population of West Virginia. Thanks to the diversification of the economy, including the development of tourism (which is greatly facilitated by the nature of West Virginia), at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries, the economic situation in the state improved. In modern times, West Virginia remains the largest supplier of coal east of the Mississippi River (and second in the United States, after Wyoming ).
