Nevada Economy

Several very popular casinos are also located in the city of Laughlin, which is one hundred and fifty kilometers south of Las Vegas, on the Colorado River. Laughlin’s entertainment and activities are considered more family-friendly than those offered in Las Vegas or Reno. In addition, Laughlin hosts the largest annual biker event in the Western United States, the Laughlin River Run.

Nevada is the only US state where prostitution is legal in some counties.

Nevada has one of the highest unemployment rates in the US.

Outside of Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada’s main economic sectors are agriculture and mining.

Nevada’s agriculture is primarily focused on raising cattle, producing milk, and growing vegetables. The state maintains over 500,000 cattle and 70,000 sheep. More than 90% of Nevada’s arable land is used to grow fodder crops.

Many minerals are mined in the state, primarily gold (about 9% of world production) and silver. The Nevada fields are very rich, but they are also expensive to mine.

In addition, a number of machine-building enterprises operate in Nevada, food products and electrical equipment are produced.

One of the largest employers in Nevada is the United States federal government. Several military installations are located in Nevada, the largest and most famous of which is Nellis Air Force Base.

Located in North Las Vegas, just thirteen kilometers north of Las Vegas, the air base is used to train American military pilots. It often hosts exercises, including international ones.

Nellis Air Force Base is home to and trains the US Air Force’s Thunderbirds aerobatic team.

Nellis Air Force Base is believed to be home to the highly classified “Area 51”.

There are several other military facilities in Nevada, including the test site where nuclear weapons have been tested since 1951.

Fifty-seven hectares of land at Nellis Air Force Base is occupied by a solar power plant with a capacity of 14 megawatts. 70,000 solar panels provide over 25 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, while the air base itself consumes only a quarter of the energy produced. At the time of completion, in 2007, it was the most powerful power plant in the world.

In general, Nevada, due to its sunny climate with low rainfall, is very well suited for creating a solar power plant. The largest of them – “Solar One” (Nevada Solar One) with a nominal capacity of 64 megawatts and “Cooper-Montain Solar Installation” with a capacity of 48 megawatts. Both of these stations are located in southern Nevada, in the Mojave Desert near Boulder City.

Much attention is paid to the development of clean solar energy in Nevada, as in neighboring California. In the coming years, the state plans to build new, even more powerful solar power plants.
