Economy of New Mexico

New Mexico ‘s economy is based on mining, US government funding , tourism, and to a lesser extent agriculture and industry.

New Mexico ranks sixth among the US states in terms of oil production and provides more than 5% of the country’s natural gas production. In addition, the bowels of New Mexico are rich in ores containing copper, tin, manganese, beryllium, molybdenum, zinc, lead and other metals; potassium salts; perlite and other minerals.

Despite the fact that New Mexico ranks second (after Wyoming) in the United States in terms of explored reserves of uranium ores, at present they are almost not mined, including due to radioactive contamination of the environment.

The economy of New Mexico is very dependent on the federal authorities, the state ranks first in the United States in terms of money allocated from the country’s budget to the amount of taxes collected. The government of the United States of America is also one of the largest employers in New Mexico.

This situation has developed due to the fact that several of the largest military and research facilities are located in the sparsely populated expanses of the Land of Enchantment. Among them are Kirtland Air Base (whose staff exceeds 23,000), Holloman, Cannon; the huge US Army base Fort Bliss (located partly in New Mexico and partly in Texas) and, of course, the largest (about 8,300 km2 ) military facility in the United States of America, the White Sands missile range. It was here that the world’s first nuclear device was detonated on July 16, 1945. Nowadays, various weapons systems are being tested at the test site, and work is being carried out on NASA programs, research on solar activity, etc.

In the city of Los Alamos in northern New Mexico, since 1943, one of the largest laboratories in the world has been operating in the field of nuclear physics. Los Alamos National Laboratory is one of two in the United States (along with Livermore in California) that directly develops nuclear weapons. In addition, the laboratory, which employs about 10,000 employees, deals with renewable energy sources, nanotechnology, biology (in particular genetics) and other fundamental and applied areas of science.

Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque hosts another major research facility, the Sandia National Laboratory. Here they design and test non-nuclear components of nuclear weapons, deal with problems of energy, biology, and materials science. The Sandia laboratory operates the world’s largest X-ray generator, designed to test materials under extreme temperatures and pressures.
