Unofficial holidays in the USA
In addition to federal, “official” holidays in the United States, there are many others celebrated either in a particular area, or by one or another racial, ethnic, religious or other social group of the US population.
There are also a number of holidays established by the laws of a particular US state. As a rule, these are holidays associated with some important historical event or person for this state.
At the same time, a number of holidays are considered “commercial”, artificially advertised to increase sales of gifts or other “holiday” goods. In the US, there is even a disparaging name for such holidays ” Hallmark holidays ” (after the name of the largest company producing greeting cards). Hallmark holidays often include Valentine’s Day, Grandparents’ Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and some others.
