Interesting facts

The island was inhabited 4000 years ago.

When Christopher Columbus landed on the island on November 19, 1493, during his second voyage to the shores of America, the island was inhabited by Indians who called themselves the Taino. The Tainos called the island Boriken, which was later interpreted by the Spaniards as Borinken. Initially, the Spaniards named the island San Juan Bautista in honor of St. John the Baptist, but later the island was named Puerto Rico, which means “Rich Port”.
The colonization of the island by the Spaniards began in 1508.
