More about Colombia
Law
The highest court of ordinary jurisdiction is the Supreme Court (Corte Suprema de Justicia) in Bogotá, whose 25 judges are appointed by the latter itself on the proposal of the Supreme Court of Judges. The highest instance of administrative jurisdiction is the Supreme Administrative Court (Consejo de Estado). The Constitutional Court (Corte Constitucional) monitors compliance with the constitution. The country is divided into judicial districts, each with a higher court; Sub-courts can be found below the departmental level in the provinces and municipalities.
The civil code of 1873 goes back to the Chilean civil code of A. Bello . The 1971 Commercial Code shows continental European and Latin American influences. To combat drug trafficking and guerrilla activity, procedural and criminal law has been supplemented and expanded several times since the late 1980s.
Education
There is general compulsory schooling (free of charge) between the ages of 6 and 15, preceded by compulsory attendance at preschool. The general six-year secondary level builds on the five-year primary school. After 4 years it offers an intermediate qualification with which the transfer to various vocational schools is possible. Successful graduation after six years is the prerequisite for attending a university. The higher education sector includes state and private universities, technological institutes and technical colleges. The largest university is the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (founded in 1867) in Bogotá.
Media
The media landscape is diverse, but characterized by strong economic concentration. Threats, assaults and violence against journalists are common due to political instability, corruption and crime. The most popular mass medium is television.

News Agency: Colprensa.
Broadcasting: There are around 60 television stations. The state-run RTVC Señal Colombia Sistema de Medios Públicos operates two television stations (“Señal Colombia”, “Señal Institucional”) and “Radio Nacional de Colombia”, and it also has a 25% stake in the TV station “Canal Uno”. The largest private broadcasters are “Caracol TV” and “Caracol Radio” as well as “RCN TV” and “RCN Radio”; they belong to the Santo Domingo and Organización Ardila Lülle corporate groups.
