More about Italy
Unions
The Italian trade union movement was fragmented from the start. There are Christian, socialist and social democratic unions. The Confederazione Generale del Lavoro Italiano was established in 1906 as a free trade union central organization. After the collapse of the fascist regime, the Confederazione Generale Italiana del Lavoro (CGIL) was formed in 1944; the Christian trade unionists resigned from it in 1948. In the same year the Libera CGIL (LCGIL) was founded as an attempt by a non-partisan union. Republicans and socialists formed the Federazione Italiana del Lavoro (FIL), so that now CGIL, LCGIL, FIL and the Unione Italiana del Lavoro (UIL), established in 1950, coexisted. In 1950 LCGIL and FIL merged to form the Confederazione Italiana Sindacati Lavoratori (CISL). Other umbrella organizations are the Unione Generale del Lavoro (UGL), which emerged in 1996 from the union of the neo-fascist Confederazione Italiana Sindacati Nazionali Lavoratori (CISNAL), and Sindacato Padano (SIN.PA, founded in 1997), which is related to the Lega Nord. There are also around 160 professionally oriented autonomous trade unions, over 60 of which belong to the Confederazione Italiana Sindacati Autonomi Lavoratori (CISAL, founded in 1957).
