Rocky Mountains
The Rocky Mountains are a mountain system in the Cordillera, stretching for more than four and a half thousand kilometers across the United States and Canada.
The southern foothills of the Rocky Mountains begin in New Mexico, to the north the ridges become higher and further apart, reaching a width of about 500 km in Colorado and Utah . Most of the largest mountains in the Rocky Mountains are located in Colorado, including the highest peak in the region (and the second highest in the continental United States after Mount Whitney in California) – Mount Elbert (4,401 meters above sea level). The Rocky Mountains stretch further northwest into Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. The Rocky Mountains are made up of numerous individual ranges: the Sangre de Cristo (in New Mexico and Colorado, the region’s southernmost mountain range), the Front Range (in Colorado, the western limit of the Great Plains), the Wind River and Bighorn in Wyoming, the Absaroka, and Birtut in Montana and others.
The Rocky Mountains are the watershed between the river basins of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans (the so-called ” continental divide “). Mount Triple Divide Peak (“Peak of the Three Borders”) in Glacier National Park (Montana) got its name due to the fact that water from its slopes flows not only into these two oceans, but also into Hudson Bay.
There are several national parks in the Rocky Mountains, including the oldest of them – Yellowstone, which is one of the most popular attractions in the United States.
