More about Vietnam

Population

The ethnic composition shows great regional differences. 86% of the population belong to the Vietnamese national people (Kinh), who mainly live in the delta regions, the agrarian favored areas (»rice chambers«) of the country. The Chinese are mostly found in the cities of the south, while the majority of the remaining 52 minorities live in the country’s mountainous regions. The largest minorities in the Vietnamese-Chinese border area are the Yao and Nung , who have strong historical and cultural ties with China (other groups in this region: Tai, Giay, San Chay). The Hmong (Miao) dominate the provinces bordering Laos; the central and southern highlands are dominated by Cham (south of Da Nang), Jarai, Mnong, Muong, Raglai, Rhadé and minorities of the Mon-Khmer group (Gie-Trieng, Hre, Ma, Sedang, Stieng). The influence of the Khmer peoples extends into the Mekong Delta. The official language is Vietnamese. It is written with Latin letters, supplemented by many diacritical characters (Quoc ngu). English is used as the commercial language.

The population density is 308 residents / km 2. The majority of the population lives in rural areas (2017: 65%) and is concentrated in the delta regions of the Red River and the Mekong. The increasing rural exodus leads to an intensification of the already recognizable tendency towards concentration in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. As a result of the 2nd Indochina War and the socialist transformation of South Vietnam, many Vietnamese have left the country. Today about 2.7 million Vietnamese live abroad (especially in the USA, Canada, Australia). In addition, around 1.5 million people live as migrant workers in South Korea, Japan and Malaysia. Your money transfers to relatives back home are economically important.

The biggest cities in Vietnam

Biggest Cities (Inh. 2019)
Ho Chi Minh City 7 021 000
Hanoi 3,471,000
Da Nang 988 600
Haiphong 841,000
Bien Hoa 807,000

Social: Due to the high economic growth, the poverty rate fell from 15.5% to 5.8% in 2006-16. However, the ethnic minorities often experience severe disadvantages. It is not uncommon for them to be ousted by returning Vietnamese abroad. The struggle for land in the coffee-growing areas repeatedly leads to violent unrest among the farmers.

Vietnam has an efficient health system. However, the consequences of the use of poison gas during the Vietnam War can still be felt today. Many cancers and malformations in newborns are attributed to the use of the defoliant Agent Orange.
