More about Taiwan
The island of Taiwan is located in the southern part of the arch of the island off the East Asian coast. The central, young fold mountains, which it traverses in a north-south direction, occupy almost two thirds of the entire island area; more than 60 peaks reach heights of over 3,000 m above sea level. The highest point in the country is the Yu Shan (3,952 m above sea level) in the »central mountain range« Zhongyang Shanmo (Chungyang Shan-mai). To the northwest of the central chain runs a second, geologically different mountain range (Xue Shan at 3,884 m above sea level). The central mountain range breaks off towards the east to the Taidonggraben, which is bounded by a narrow coastal mountain range (up to 1,682 m above sea level); to the west it gradually descends over hilly and terraced land to the 8–40 km wide coastal plain, which is accompanied by a compensatory coast.
In the north of the island rises above the Taipei basin, a group of extinct volcanoes that belong to the volcanic arc of the Ryūkyū Islands ; Crustal movements continue in Taiwan to this day (an average of 160 earthquakes per year; 1999 earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale with an epicenter 150 km southwest of Taipei).
The rivers are short and particularly rich in water in the north.
Climate
The climate is tropical in the south, subtropical in the rest of the area and is under the influence of monsoons (summer: southwest, winter: northeast monsoon). Frequently Taiwan is of typhoons struck. The mean annual temperature is 21 ° C in the north and 25 ° C in the south. Annual precipitation amounts to over 3,000 mm in the north and 1,800 mm in the south-west.
Vegetation
58% of the island is forest-covered, in 1970 it was 62%. With vegetation levels rising higher in the south, mangroves , palms, bamboo and acacias can be found up to 500–800 m above sea level, and up to 1,500–2,000 m above sea level the most extensive level of evergreen subtropical forests (Japanese cedar , camphor tree , Palm, oak), up to 2,600 m above sea level a mixed forest (oak, elm, maple, beech, pine, spruce, cedar species), up to 3,000 m above sea level pure coniferous forest, above knee wood, grassland and cushion plants.
